Assamese will be made a mandatory subject in all schools in Assam till Class 10, Education Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced in a press meet today on June 7th.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati Dr. Sarma said, “Assamese subject will be made mandatory in all schools. Governor has approved the decision. Students from class 1-10 will have to study Assamese as a mandatory subject.”
“Students in Barak Valley can opt for Bengali and Students from BTC can opt for Bodo language instead of Assamese,” the education minister added.
Earlier on December 21st 2019, the minister said that State Legislative Assembly the cabinet would introduce a bill in which any medium- English, Bengali, Hindi schools will have to teach Assamese language as a mandatory subject till Class 10.
